Revealing the Power Of Jesus

John 14: 12-14

Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works l I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Acts 19: 13-16

Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus who Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you? Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.

I pray that you carefully read both of those verses. The first is of Jesus telling his disciples how to gain access into the power of him. He gives specific direction that many of us today do not follow yet expect to gain the fullness of Christ power. Christ tells his disciples 1. to believe in him and then 2. do the works he has been doing. As those two tasks are in progress Christ will do whatever you ask in his name. See, what I learned today in reading, is that in order to gain access to the power of Jesus’ name and of Jesus himself you must first be obedient, have faith and live as Christ lived.

Another amazing part that the Holy Spirit revealed to me is that Jesus doesn’t say after you’ve done these things he will do what you ask in his name. He uses the word and which is inclusive, meaning in addition to. So adding to your obedience, to your faith and your works he will do what you ask in his name. You can only reach the power of Jesus believing, and doing as he commanded. It doesn’t work because you saw Jesus deliver someone else. It doesn’t work because you read the Word here and there. It’s doesn’t work because you “have a good heart” and you “don’t bother no body”.  It also doesn’t work because you tithe every Sunday. It doesn’t work because you go to church every Sunday, maybe bible study and prayer during the week.  You tap into the power of Jesus when you live righteously. Its when you have a heart after his heart. Its when you truly seek to live and be holy as he is holy. When you truly do your best to live as Christ lived, then you can tap into his power. I did not say anything about being perfect. I did not say a word about never falling or making a mistake. That is what grace is for. Grace is there to lend a hand to get us BACK on the path of righteousness. (note: grace cannot do much for you if you continue to dwell in sin. Grace is for the sinner that wants to repent and turn away from evil things and run towards God. Not purposely returning to sin, going back and forth) Christ’s power is for his true disciples.

In the verses from Acts, we see how the power of Jesus’ name was not in affect because those who “attempted” to use his name never KNEW Christ. We see that even in the way that they stated his name was in error. “In the name of THE Jesus whom PAUL preaches” That statement alone lets you know that these men knew nothing of Christ. They were mockers and false disciples of Christ. They referred to someone and something that they simply HEARD about but never experienced. How could they expect the power of Jesus to show when they don’t even know him. The scripture goes on to say that “one day the evil spirit answered them.” This statement further displays that the Jewish priest and others’ lack of Christ. It means that these men were trying to cast out this demon for days. In every instance in the bible, where either Christ himself or one of his true disciples rebuked or healed it happened IMMEDIATELY. Where it did not happen immediately, it was because the one rebuking and healing had little to no faith or never knew Christ (as in this situation).

Finally, the evil spirit says to them “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?”  Wow! As Christians, we know that there is power in the name of Jesus. That at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow above the earth, in the earth, and underneath it. (Philippians 2:10) Its amazing to see that the evil spirit knew more of Jesus and even his true disciple Paul that these men. It knew that these men did not have Christ in their lives for real and therefore they did not have his power or protection. It even went further as to ask them “who are you?”

Let’s examine this question a little bit. How would you answer if someone asked  you, Who are you? Some would say. I’m a strong, smart, independent woman. I’m a boss chick. I’m a ride or die. Heck, some would say I am a Christian. But are you really? How can we tell? Do your works reflect the work of Christ? Do your words? What does your social media pages look like? Can we see some of those late night text convos?? Can we see your most played songs on your phone? How can the evil spirits of the world know who you are? How can they know that you are of Christ when everything about you shows their reflection? You may fool the world but not God and certainly not the devil. If anything he has you fooled and in position for a good beating.

A beating is exactly what those men received from the evil spirit. Verse 16… “the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.” These men were unprepared for a battle beyond them. They foolishly went to fight completely naked and that is how they ran out. The Word tells us to put on the armor of God. (Ephesians 6:10-18) In doing so we align ourselves with Christ, the Son of God and HIS power, his power is made readily available to us. So that whatever we ask in his name shall be given to us.

I pray that you all are encouraged and truly align yourselves with the victorious power of Christ Jesus by pursuing faith, righteousness and obedience. I know I kinda went deep on you guys tonight but this was so fascinating and a blessing to me that I just had to share with you all.
